Empowering Young People for Self-Reliance and Dignity

At BUNA Charity Organisation, we recognize that one of the greatest challenges facing rural communities in Uganda today is youth unemployment. Many young people have the energy and willingness to work but lack access to practical skills, mentorship, and opportunities to start. Without intervention, this gap continues to fuel poverty, dependency, and social vulnerability.

Our Youth Skilling Program was established as a direct response to this challenge. It is built on a simple but powerful belief: when young people are equipped with the right skills and support, they can transform not only their own lives but also their communities.

A Practical, Community-Based Solution

BUNA has developed a hands-on skilling initiative centered on poultry farming and goat rearing, two of the most accessible and sustainable income-generating activities in rural Uganda. The program is designed to provide more than just theoretical knowledge. Instead, it immerses participants in practical, real-life learning experiences where they actively engage in animal care, feeding, disease management, and basic agribusiness practices.

Through this approach, young people gain confidence, competence, and a clear pathway to economic independence. They leave the program not just trained, but prepared to start and manage their own small-scale enterprises.

Turning Skills into Livelihoods

What makes this program unique is its strong focus on immediate application and sustainability. At the completion of the training, each participant is supported with a starter resource—typically a local chicken—which serves as the foundation for their own income-generating project.

This small but impactful intervention ensures that no trainee leaves empty-handed. Instead, they return to their communities with both the knowledge and the means to begin building a livelihood. Over time, these small projects grow, enabling beneficiaries to generate income, support their families, and reinvest in their futures.

Creating Real Impact

Since its inception, the Youth Skilling Program has already made a meaningful difference. To date, over 100 young people have been trained in poultry keeping and goat rearing. Many of these beneficiaries have gone on to establish their own small farming enterprises, creating a ripple effect of economic activity and improved household welfare within their communities.

Beyond income, the program restores hope, dignity, and purpose. Young people who once faced uncertainty are now active contributors to their families and local economies.

A Growing Demand, A Limited Capacity

Despite these achievements, the need continues to grow. Every day, more young people express a strong desire to join the program and gain the skills necessary to change their lives. Unfortunately, BUNA Charity Organisation is currently constrained by limited resources, making it difficult to meet this overwhelming demand.

The expansion of the program is hindered by challenges such as the high cost of training materials, limited availability of animal feeds for practical sessions, and insufficient funds to support trainers and facilitators. Additionally, providing each trainee with a starter resource—an essential component of the program—requires sustained financial investment.

Without additional support, many motivated and deserving youth are left without opportunities, and the cycle of poverty continues.
